The building at 131 and 133 Pembury Road, Tonbridge is believed to have been
built around 1880 when Pembury Road was known as Primrose Hill. Originally
two separate cottages, they were converted to a Beer House in the early
1890s. In 1896 the property was purchased by Kenward and Court, brewers of
beers and ales based in Hadlow. The property was known as "Druids Inn and
subsequently "Ancient Druids Beerhouse. The Order of Ancient Druids met in
Tonbridge but it is not known what connection they may have had with the
property, other than providing the name. In 1910 The Ancient Druids
Beerhouse was valued at £1250 and was let to Jak Chalking at a rent of £18
per annum. It was described as including a Bar, a Bar Parlour and Smoke Room
together with two Cellars. Charrington's eventually acquired the property
and it continued to trade as 'The Ancient Druid' until October 1971. Part of
the Charrington's bar still features in the property and the post that
supported the pub sign still stands outside the property. *
