In 1861, the Roebuck Vaults was managed by Daniel Brown, of Sileby, and his
wife Elizabeth; plus Sarah Allen, Barmaid aged 22 from Northampton; with
Elizabeth Gamble, aged 18 and Edwin Newton, who were both 18 and local.
Prior to this, in 1851, Daniel had been managing a pub in Silver Street,
probably the one that backed onto the Roebuck. He was quite a young
landlord, having taken over his first pub, with his wife, in his twenties.
*
He must have made quite a bit of money, because at the age of 49 he retired
to a house facing Victoria Park, where he lived with a servant or two. His
wife lived on after his death in the 1890s, and she died in 1910. She was
probably from Bethnal Green, in London. A relative of mine, Elizabeth
Grant, who had previous experience in the pub trade herself, acted as Mrs
Brown’s housekeeper at about the turn of the twentieth century. *
