Black Horse, Butcher Row, East Smithfield

The Black Horse would have been demolished around 1828 for the St Katherine Dock Improvement

Aldgate pub history index

The Black Horse stood on Butcher Row in East Smithfield, part of the historic Aldgate district of the City of London. Contemporary advertisements from the Morning Advertiser show the premises trading as a liquor shop and public house by at least 1806, when the business was offered to let, indicating it was established and actively serving the local thoroughfare at that time. Further evidence from 1828 records the Black Horse being sold off with its fittings in advance of the major improvements connected with St Katherine Dock, a large dockland redevelopment that reshaped this area of East Smithfield. This transaction — tied explicitly to the purchase of the premises for dock improvement works — strongly suggests that the Black Horse was demolished around 1828 as part of these changes.
