Blue Boar, 17 Sparrow Corner, Aldgate E1

Aldgate pub history index

The Blue Boar was a long-running public house at 17 Sparrow Corner, Aldgate E1, also recorded at times as 17 Rosemary Lane. Documentary evidence shows that the Blue Boar existed from at least 1770, when Nicholas Powers is recorded at the address in Old Bailey proceedings, indicating the tavern’s use in the late 18th century. (pubwiki.co.uk)

Early 19th-century records, including Sun Fire Office insurance entries, list victuallers such as Henry Hay (1804) and Richard Dutton (1807), showing the Blue Boar’s continued operation at the start of the 1800s. The pub remains on record in the 1841 census under Henry Mayes and in mid-century directories and censuses under Daniel Keymer, demonstrating continuity of use through the first half of the 19th century. The Blue Boar’s life as a licensed tavern thus spans at least nine decades, making it one of Aldgate’s longer-established public houses during this period. Like many traditional inns in the City, it eventually disappeared from the record after the later 19th century, reflecting the pace of urban change in this part of London. (pubwiki.co.uk)
