Coach & Horses, 56 Minories, Aldgate EC3

Aldgate pub history index

The Coach & Horses was a long‑established public house at 56 Minories, Aldgate EC3, with evidence of licensed victualler activity from at least 1790, when Richard Williams is listed as the victualler in early Sun Fire Office insurance records. Throughout the 19th century the pub continued in operation under a succession of proprietors, appearing regularly in directories and census returns with names such as William Clark, William Shersby, John Bowles and others — demonstrating continuity of trade over many decades in a busy City thoroughfare.

The Coach & Horses name suggests a traditional inn catering originally to coach travellers or associated trades, a common naming pattern for taverns in London indicating their role as waypoints for people and transport in the pre‑railway era — though by the later 19th and early 20th centuries the establishment had shifted to more urban, local patronage.

In the mid‑20th century the pub persisted through world events and social changes: it was damaged by an air raid in 1940 during the Second World War but remained open. However, later redevelopment of Minories and the widening of Goodmans Yard for the Aldgate one‑way system led to its closure and demolition around 1977. By the early 1970s it still appeared in pub directories, but the building no longer survives.
