The 'charabang' is a very early coach used for 'beanos' to the coast or country as a pub day out (a forerunner of the only fools & horses jolly boys outing!). The women are in their Edwardian Sunday best, the other most have 'bakers' style hats on. The charabang is plated to a maximum of 12mph, they must have left early for Ramsgate!!!!

The Horse Shoe, Grange Road, Bermondsey, was at one time run by my great great great grandfather Daniel Macord who had previously been a carpenter. His name appears as the landlord in the Sun Insurance files on a policy dated 21 September 1826 and he was still in charge when he died at the end of 1834/early 1835; his will dated 16 December 1834 was proved on 14 February 1835. The youngest of his four daughters, Lydia, was born at the Horse Shoe in 1828. Unfortunately the will doesn't say much about the pub itself although it lists all his silver spoons and jugs etc and describes it as a 'victualling house' which I take to be a restaurant as much as a place for drinking. He seems to have owned and rented out quite a lot of other property in the neighbourhood as well. ***

In the 1871 Census, the landlady of the Jolly Tanners, Amelia STACEY, was born Amelia FLATTELY in Haltwhistle, Northumberland, in early 1841 and was baptised at the parish church there on 16 May 1841. Also in the 1871 household was Letitia FLATTELY, her sister. Amelia married John STACEY on 14 June 1865 at Waltham Abbey, Essex.

Their father, Patrick Flattely, was an Excise Officer and, I suppose, would have spent a lot of his time in pubs, hence establishing the family connection.
On 07 November 1878, Letitia Flattely married Johann Ludwig REHM, a naturalised British citizen born in Pfullingen, Wrttemberg, Germany around 1830. He was also a licensed victualler, and landlord of the Horseshoe , Tower Bridge road, Bermondsey in 1881.
Another of the FLATTELY sisters, Mary, married William Frederick HIGTON, another Excise Officer, on 16 December 1856 at Newington St Mary's. **
I suspect there is a line of research on the interplay between excise officers and licensed victuallers, and another on how and why excise officers were moved around the country quite frequently. I suspect it was to stop them getting too cosy with the licensees! **

The 1874 petty sessions note an Johann Ludwig Rehm at the White Hart, Tottenham Court road.
