The two ladies in the foreground are my Grandmother and wife of John (Jack) Grumball (on the left) – Annie (Collins) Grumball (known as Nance).

Jack Grumball is second from the right. My uncle, Maurice Lodge is in the doorway next to Jack (and third from the right) and my father, Fred Grumball, is in the doorway next to Maurice (and fourth from the right). I don’t know the other three men in the photo, but guess the others are friends of the family or regulars at the pub.

I am the Grandson of John William Grumball who was a publican at the Star & Garter  during WW2. He was born 5 August 1891 at 140 Clifton Road, Croydon, and died at 6 Gibson Avenue, Wembley, on the 27 February 1951. He had very much hoped to continue at the pub after the war, but this was not possible – I gather from my uncle that the tenancy was returned to the original publican when he returned from military service. ***
