July 1954/ Boarded and shuttered one of London’s oldest inns. The “Fox under the Hill” stands empty, waiting for the demolition workers to arrive. The site has been compulsorily bought for an addition to the Denmark Hill housing site, and some days ago all the old regulars gathered to drink with the landlord Frank Bailey and sing Auld Land Syne for the “old Fox”. Centuries old, the “Fox” was once Camberwell’s village pub where local citizens gathered for a pint of good Kentish ale after patrolling Dulwich Common for defence against footpads and robbers. Mr. Bailey doesn’t lose his job with the end of the “Fox”. A new house to serve the Denmark Hill Estate has been opened a few hundred yards away/../../../../ South London Press**
