To Licensed Victuallers - At a General Meeting of the Friendly Tobacco Pipe Manufactory, held on Thursday, 6t of August 1807, at J Newsons, the Yorkshire Grey Tavern, Cheyne walk, Chelsea, it was unanimously resolved,

Robbery upon a Jew - Michael Hughes, a discharged soldier of the 22nd Regiment of Foot, was charged with robbing Aaron Levi, a Jew salesman residing in High street Chatham, of a quantity of wearing apparel, which the latter had brought to town, in order to dispose of among the Chelsea Pensioners, this being the time appointed for the receipt of their quarterly pensions.
It appeared that the complainant had deposited his goods at the white Hart public house, Kings road, Chelsea, and among the rest of the articles he had brought to town there was a complete undress suit made specially for a sergeant of the 4th regiment, with whom Mr Levi was acquainted, and also another for a private of the same regiment.
Mr Levi deposed that he had many dealings with the prisoner at Rochester, and had always found him a very dishonourable man. Upon one occasion he supplied him with a silver watch, and a quantity of clothing, and in addition, had lent him 5 shillings, upon the faith of being paid the whole amount upon his receiving his last quarters pension; but he had not paid him a halfpenny, and up to the present time denied being in his debt. On Thursday last, he was at the White Hart, supplying the pensioners with wearing apparel, and the prisoner was present. In the evening both the suits described were missing, and at eight o'clock yesterday morning, he met the prisoner in Chelsea with a bundle under his arm; he immediatley accused him of the robbery, upon which the prisoner knocked him down.
Complainant, however, contrived to detain him until the police came up, when he gave him into custody, and on the bundle being examined, it was found to contain a portion of his property. Mr Levi added that whenever he came into this neighbourhood of Chelsea or Westminster, he was sure to be robbed.
Miss Abrahams, the niece of the prosecutor, stated that the prisoner was at the White Hart the whole of Thursday afternoon; he was very drunk and abusive, and witness was struck by him several times.
Police constable McCann, 40B, deposed that upon searching the prisoner he found upwards of 4 pounds in omey.
The prisoner in defence, said that he was discharged from the regiment on Thursday upon a pension. He knew nothing whatever of the robbery, but had bought the bundle of clothes which had been found upon him, in the General Howard public house, Jews row, Chelsea, of a man for 1 pound 5 shillings.
