St. John-street-road was, until 1818, called Islington-road. "On Tuesday next, being Shrove Tuesday, will be a fine hog barbyqu'd whole, at the
house of Peter Brett, at the Rising Sun in Islington road, with other diversions. It is the house where the ox was roasted whole at Christmas last."—Mist's Journal, February 9, 1726.

On the east side of St. John's-street-road, adjoining the site of the old almshouses founded by Lady Owen, stands the Old Red Lion public-house, which has been recently renovated, and bears the inscription in conspicuous characters on its front—" The Old Red Lion, established 1415." Not very many years ago, this inn stood almost alone; opposite were pens in which sheep were folded previously to their being taken to Smithfield for sale, and in the midst of which stood an old house, called "Goose Farm;" and the whole space from St. John's-street-road to the Belvidere Tavern, Penton-street, in one direction, and to Coppice-row, Clerkenwell, in another, was, with the exception of a few erections, entirely rural. The scene is now entirely changed, and the whole of the ground has, for some time, been covered with buildings, streets, &c. The Red Lion was frequently the halting-place of some of the most distinguished ornaments of the last century in their suburban recreations. Thomson, the author of the "SeasonsHogarth, who has introduced the gable-end of the house in his picture of Evening; and Paine, the author of the "Rights of Man," lived under its roof; and Dr. Johnson (it is said) and other celebrated men of that day often refreshed themselves at the house.  - St Mary Islington History 1842
