You have my Ancestor Alfred Brandon down as publican from 1868 to after 1874. The family were major market gardeners in Rotherhithe and after the settlement of a long lasting family dispute in 1860, his father Richard would have come into a lot of property. Alfred married Sarah Ann Wilson [nee Witherden] in 1868, and I suspect the father gave him money to leave the market garden business and set up in the pub. He was there in the 1871 Census but must not have made a success of it, as by 1881 was calling himself a 'Publican out of Business' which is what he did for the rest of his life.  He died in 1922 leaving £7742 which is £164, 215 today; so he didn't struggle. *
