A bit of pre-pub history :- My guess is that Thomas Amos built the
pub. Incidentally, in February, 1838; a Thomas Amos marries an Elizabeth
Plummer. He is a builder, she is daughter of Robert Plummer, licensed
victualler. Both are listed of address as Kingsland road. He is listed as
son of a gentleman, and allegedly a widow. They are still living in
Kingsland road in the 1841 census. By 1851, their address is 18 Tyssen
terrace, where as you can see he is still listed as builder !

James Abbott (1834-1899) was my great grandfather and he leased The Tavern
from his uncle in June 1861. In fact he and his wife Matilda lived there, and
my grandfather was born there in September 1861, followed by three sisters
and four brothers until 1874.  In 1874 The Tavern was leased on to
Robert Mann for a term of 73 years. Prior to this, James Robert, a licensed
victualler himself, had lived at 31 Coleman street in the City, i.e. the
	Fountain & Star
	.
