David Santer was born in 1808 at Northiam, Susses and died in 1876 in Islington. He was first a brewer manager (in 1861 at the Gordon & Co. brewery at Frederick Place, Notting Hill) and by 1869 he was at the Duke of Sussex ***

He was first married to Susannah Rofe, who in 1851 was a Straw Hat Manufacturer - they then lived at 7 Glengall Terrace, Poplar. She died in 1854 in Islington, leaving him with 6 living children. ***

He then married again on 13th Oct, 1866, a widow, to Esther Cobley (née Pugh), born 1825 in Bishop's Castle, Shropshire, who died after 1901 in London, she was the daughter of a master builder, Richard Pugh.
In 1848 Poplar, Middlesex, she had married a woollen draper, Henry Cobley, born 1822 in Coventry, Warwickshire, who died around 1860 in Islington (?). In 1851 they had lived at 5 Wilsons Terrace, Bromley, Middlesex. ***

After his death, I believe, she took over the bar, the "Prince of Wales", in 16 St. James Street, Islington, where she lived in 1861. As David at this time was the manager of a brewery so close to her bar, they must have met when she bought beer from the Gordon & Co. brewery. She had five children by her first husband. ***

They had one daughter (the important one to me):

Agnes Beatrice Santer, born 1868, at 272 Portobello Road, she is my great-grandmother. ***
