In 1901, my great aunt Jane Harriet Roche was the landlady of the Bear &
Rummer at 43 Mortimer Street London. The barmaid was her brother in law’s
sister Esther Kennedy. However, by 1911 Jane was back ‘home’ looking after
her ageing parents. I think that Jane (a dress maker) was encouraged into
the business by her brother in law, Frederick William Kennedy
(landlord/manager of many London pubs – Old Parr’s Head; Mason’s Arms;
Harcourt Arms etc – between 1890 and 1924)
Fortunately all these buildings still exist; two are still PHs. **
