The pub at St James Stairs was "The Ship". I was searching London Archives for my 3 Great Grandfather, John Piercey(about 1760-1811). Apart from his will which told me that he was the a cheesemonger of Philip Street, the site came up with some insurance notices....e.g.
"Royal Sun Alliance, insured, John Piercey Dec.29 1808, The Ship, King James Stairs, Shadwell, Edward Richard & Co." Plus similar for 1809 noting he was a victualler. *
