Formerly the Pimlico Tavern, present by at least 1609, this
pub was known as the Britannia Tavern by 1841. Rebuilt in 1858, this pub, later
the Britannia Theatre, converted to cinema use in 1923, was destroyed by bombing
in 1940, the site was replaced with housing in the early 1970s. *+
At 188 Hoxton Old Town in 1839 & 1851. The address is also
given in 1856 as 188 Hoxton High Street, Hoxton Old Town. *

My 3 times great grandfather, Alfred Matthews was a porter there in 1858 as
given on his son's birth certificate. He was born in Hoxton in 1834 and
lived in the area until circa 1865 when he and his family moved to
Southwark. His father was a wine cooper but I don't know if he ever worked
there too. ***
