The WWI military records of Frederick James Pullum (1888 - 1936), when he enlisted in October 1916, stated his previous occupation was Public House Manager (later licensed victualler and publican). His employer was H. Short and the address The Shaftesbury Arms, Shaftesbury Street, 1 New North Road, London N1. H. Short was the owner in 1921. The previous owner is Robert Moy in 1915.
The H of H. Short I believe is Henry, as Frederick Pullum married Maud Edith Short in 1913.
Maud's father was Henry Short and he was a publican (at a beer house) at The Prince Of Wales, 268 Hoxton Street, Hoxton from 1891 to at least 1911. You also have Redvers Clarence Short at the Shaftesbury Arms 1934, 1938 & 1944. This is Maud's younger brother. (Frederick Reovers/Redvers Pullum was the eldest son of Frederick and Maud); In 1933 Frederick and Maud were at The Duke of York, 24 Wenlock Street, Shoreditch. Frederick died in 1936 but Maud remained there until at least 1939. **

1921/H. Short/../../../Hughes Directory *

In 1921 in Hughes Directory, H Short is the Publican at the Shaftesbury Arms, but on the 1921 census, Henry Short, his wife Eliza and 16 year old daughter Gladys, have moved to 142 Ramuz Drive in Southend-on Sea. Henry is still a publican but the address does not seem to have been a public house. Visiting is their 18 year old daughter, Maisie who unlike the other women whose occupation is home duties, Maisie's occupation is recorded as "Assisting father in Public Line". **
Living at The Shaftesbury Arms in 1921, are Maud's siblings Ethel Victoria Short (24) and Redvers Clarence Short (20), both are Licensed Victuallers and with them is a servant, Mary Bonner.
Redvers seems to have stayed there until at least 1944, Frederick's younger brother William John Pullum is living in Haberdasher Street with his wife and 1 year old son but he is a barman at The Shaftesbury and his employer is Mr H Short. Also on the 1921 census, Frederick is still a Licensed Victualler and now an employer, but he and Maud with 4 year old son Frederick Redvers Pullum are at The Duke of York Public House in 24 Wenlock Street, also in Hoxton.
