I came across this newspaper article whilst researching my ancestor, James Winfred Hutchinson. **
In 1881 he was licensee at the Green Dragon in Lambeth, but by 1888 he’s apparently running the Rose & Crown, Little Newport Street and apprehended an unlucky burglar. Thought you might find it interesting. The story appeared in more or less detail in several newspapers:
Morning Post 27 March 1888: “Recovery of stolen property. At the Marlborough St police court yesterday afternoon Mark Van Boolen, marine store dealer of Phoenix Street, Charing Cross Road, was charged on remand with having in his possession a gold and diamond brooch and a Jubilee coin brooch and earrings, together with other articles, value £10, the property of Mr James Winfred Hutchinson, of the Rose and Crown public house, Little Newport Street …”
