My mother was born here on the 19th January 1922 when the licensee was her father Henry Charles Thomas. His name is in letters on the building and that's him standing in the right hand doorway wearing the hat, in about 1920.
My mother's older sister was also born there on 1st May 1919; so H.C. Thomas would have been licensee there at that point as well. The Hop Pole is shown as place of birth on both their birth certificates. The next (younger) sister was born in 1925 but her place of birth is shown as in Sussex, so the family must have moved on from the Hop Pole by that point
Henry Charles Thomas was the younger brother of Richard William Thomas who is lsited as the Licensee in 1914/1915. I come from 5 generations of licensees in the London area.

This Tapas bar is now in the building at 14 Gambia Street which was the Hop Pole – appears to
have been a rebuild in the 1850’s when the railway was cut through that area.
