My great grandfather Raymond Klapper, a "licensed victualler" was the landlord of the Grapes. Raymond came from Breslau in Prussia and Anna from Southern Germany. *

The London Gazette for 6 August 1867 (4403) describes Raymond Klapper as a licensed victualler at The Grapes Public House, 14 White Street Southwark, as part of a bankruptcy hearing report. On 18 October (5597) he is again referred to in the same way. He had previously been made bankrupt in October 1866 and sent to the Debtor's Prison but was discharged from bankruptcy on 12 December 1866 so we have assumed that is when he came to The Grapes. *

The address on their marriage certificate for 13 January 1867 is given as 14 White Street, Borough. This is the earliest confirmed date we have of them living there. *

Then, in a transcript of the Old Bailey Sessions for 19 August 1867, his wife Anna is called as a witness and says " I am the wife of Raymond Klapper, and keep a public-house in White Street, Borough" and she goes on to describe the theft that took place there on 27 April 1867. *

His daughter Elizabeth was born there in December 1867, but their second child was born in Hackney Street, Shoreditch January-March 1870, so they had obviously moved by then. *
