It has been in existence for more than four centuries, and, so far as the present century is concerned, owed its fame – as do so many old inns – to the ‘touch of the vanished hand’ of Charles Dickens. It was at the Queens Head that the stroller Jingle accepted a financial solatium for the loss of that impressionable spinster, Miss Rachel Wardle, a proceeding which so far raised the ire of Mr Pickwick that he flung the inkstand at the retiring head of Mr Jingle. The most recent host of this now doomed landmark was Mr Nicholas Dorn.” *
