The Ratcliffe Highway Murders of 1811 saw seven people gruesomely murdered in two vicious attacks twelve days apart. An almost certainly innocent man called John Williams was apprehended for the murders and whilst on trial he committed suicide. Since suicides could not be buried in consecrated ground his body was buried in a pit under the crossroads where Cannon Street Road
and Cable Street intersect. His body was rediscovered there in 1886 when the gas main was being laid. The site where he was buried is right in front of the Crown and Dolphin, 56 Cannon Street Road. (many more details available on Wikipedia under: Ratcliffe Highway Murders). *

My great great grandfather George John PENNEY was the licencee of the Crown
& Dolphin, circa 1862 ( the year before, he was the licencee of
	THE GEORGE, 1 Portland
Street, Soho). His last child, Francis was born in the pub on 12 August
1862. The Penney family were resident there until approx 1871. In the 1871
census, George Penney was registered as the licensee of the
	MARQUIS OF CORNWALLIS, Old Ford
Road, Bow. His elder children, George Francis and Ann were, by now running
the Crown and Dolphin - George Francis had already received an inheritance
from his father in 1868 and it seems possible that he bought the pub.
However, in 1872, George John was registered at both pubs. ***
