September 1889 - a case in the City of London Court - "the plaintiff, Mr Richard F Howes, of 490 Old Ford Road, sued Mr Hirst, a publican of "The Three Tuns", Great New Street, Fetter Lane, to recover wages and damages for dismissal without notice. The plaintiff was employed as a manager at the defendant's tavern, "The Kettle Drum", St Georges Street. After being there three days, the defendant summarily dismissed him. The defendant said he did so because he found him to be intoxicated, and because he discovered that he was in the habit of giving way to drink - case found for the defendant" *
