Queen Victoria, 3 Old Gravel lane E1W

St George in East Index

The address is rather idiosyncratically numbered, as it doesn't follow the rest of the street, but this pub is at the north-east end, on or near the corner with Pennington Street. It is only named in the 1841 directory (as the Queen Victoria), but I believe it may be the same as the King and Queen which is mentioned earlier in Old Bailey cases and Sun Fire Office insurance records. One of the Old Bailey cases from 1783 features testimony from the publican of the Duke's Head (later the Old Duke William, on the other side of the road and a bit further north) that his pub lay between the King & Queen and the Hoop and Bunch of Grapes. As this latter pub was at 112 Ratcliff Highway (or 112 St George Street, since known simply as the Hoop and Grapes, further north again and just around the corner, it makes sense that the King and Queen is either the same as the pub listed at 3 Old Gravel Lane or very close to it. Other sources suggest that the King and Queen was on King and Queen Row, which although I can't find any precise evidence, may be this stretch of Old Gravel Lane and may account for the unusual numbering, separate from the rest of Old Gravel Lane. *

There are also two records to add to this, a beer retailer in 1842 and the Brave Nelson listed in 1843, both at this address. In the 1844 Thompsons directory, there are two pubs next to each other, a beer retailer at 3 Old Gravel Lane, and then the King & Queen at 1 Old Gravel Lane. The numbering goes 1,2,3,1,2,3,4,5,152 !!

Old Gravel lane in 1832 and 1842, and then  Old Gravel lane in 1921 and Wapping lane in 1940
