Elizabeth Matson, who is listed as a general servant in 1851, was my great-grandmother and I think she was the niece of the publican Edward Birch - her mother's brother. Her elder brother William Matson appears as the landlord's nephew. I think Edward Birch also ran a pub in Canterbury in 1841 (in Rose Lane), but that in 1861 he is listed as a carpenter and joiner - if it is the same Birch. By 1861 Elizabeth Matson had married my great-grandfather Henry Nevill who was a sergeant in the Rifle brigade. ***
