Liberty Bounds, 15 Trinity Square, Tower Hill, EC3

Old Tower Without pub history index

The Liberty Bounds, in Trinity Square is at the corner of Byward Street. The building was opened in 1909 as the head office of the General Steam Navigation Company, founded in 1824. *
It was the world's largest, short range shipping line. In 1929 it became part of P&O and with the rise of air travel and freight, it closed in 1972.
The company insignia is on the still on the building at roof level.

The pub takes its name from the fact that it sits on the boundary of the Liberty Of The Tower Of London. As a royal palace and garrison, the Tower was free from the control of the City Of London (a Liberty). On Accension day every three years the Yeomen of the Tower and a group of school children symbolically beat the boundaries of the Liberty with willow rods to establish their control over it.
It opened as a Wetherspoon pub on 10th April 1999
