- Two Brewers, St Catharines
The king's brewery was in the olden time at St. Catharine's. Henry Machin, in his Diary, October, 9th, 1551, records " Giles, the king's beer-brewer, dwelling at St. Catharine's, who had bled to death from a scratch on his leg, was buried this day at Aldgate, with heraldic emblazonments of his arms, and the craft of the Brewers."
The brewhouse was probably that spoken of elsewhere, in 1650, as the Bear brewhouse. There are frequent allusions to it in the ballads of that day.

John Lockie, a descriptive London Street Directory in 1810 : "St Catherine's Lane, Upper East Smithfield, at 50, six doors on the Right from Tower hill, leading to St Catherine's street and the Thames."

William Rooks, the publican of the Two Brewers, St Catherines lane , was convicted for keeping a disorderly house, and suffering gaming at late hours, against the tenour of his licence. He was ordered tp pay 2 pounds and strictly cautinoned against a repetition.
