Blue Coat Boy, 9 Brewers Green, St Margaret, Westminster

Westminster St Margaret pub history index

The Westminster City Archives Research Group state that this pub was first licensed in 1831, and that the licensee in 1841 was James Balchin. However, I cannot find either the pub or Mr Balchin anywhere in the 1841 Census. The Census does list a beer house, The Jolly Sawyers, kept by Robert Hill in the same part of Brewer’s Green as the Blue Coat Boy (house numbers unreliable in this census). The Era reports a new license granted on 9th March 1842 to Edward Coddington for (unnamed) premises on “Brewers Green, corner of Palmers Passage”, which is a good description of the location of the Blue Coat Boy.
The pub was one of the few buildings close to the line of Victoria Street which was not demolished when that street was driven through the area in 1851. Joseph Carter Wood, owner of the Artillery Brewery, rebuilt the pub as his brewery tap in 1866 and renamed it The Albert. The address probably changed to Victoria Street at that time. *
