Westminster St Margaret index
This house was built as a pub around 1827 during the development of the new estate. It stood on the north side of the square (briefly called “Montpelier Terrace” in the 1830s) towards the eastern end. The 1861 Census gives the address as Hill Street, but the 1869 OS map marks a PH two doors away from the corner with Hill Street which is almost certainly this pub. A third storey was added in 1992, but the pub closed in 1995 and was pulled down two years later. The name was “King George the Fourth” in later years – earlier references sometimes include the “King” (eg the Licence transfers in The Era), but the first Census to do so is 1911. *
