Hoop & Grapes, 14 Broadway, St Margaret, Westminster

Westminster St Margaret index

On the north side of Broadway at the corner with Queen’s Square; one or two references give the address as “Queen’s Square” (Queen Ann’s Gate in 1881 after renaming). In the early 1870s it was run together with the “Old Star and Crown” next door (No 13) by a single family: the 1871 Census lists Nos 13 and 14 as a single unit, called the “Hoop and Grapes”, with two licensed victuallers, the widow Rebecca Kennet and her son Harry. Rebecca died on 14th Oct 1872 (The Era), and in a court case reported on 7th Dec 1872 (The Morning Post) Harry Kennet, described as “keeper of the Old Star and Garter” [sic], stated: “I carry on the business of the Hoop and Grapes, Westminster, also.” This suggests that Rebecca had been officially licensee of the Hoop and Grapes until she died and Harry of the Old Star and Crown. By 1881, the two businesses were separate again. The Hoop and Grapes closed in 1913. *

24th March 1850. The Era reported that the license had lapsed, the assignees of William Benjamin having refused to accept it.
[I cannot understand this entry – Robert Kennet’s reign seems to have been continuous from all other records, so who was William Benjamin?]
