Horseshoe Tavern, Vandon Street / 15 Little George Street, York Street, St Margaret, Westminster

Westminster St Margaret index

This pub existed in 1805: an advertisement in the Morning Chronicle of Monday, August 26, 1805 for the sale of 3 houses in Goodman’s Row, Palmer’s Village, lists “the Horseshoe in Little George Street, near the Bluecoat School” as one of the places where particulars may be obtained. There is no landlord named.
I am pretty certain it stood on the corner of Little George Street and Horseshoe Alley (the 1878 OS map has a PH there). Horseshoe Alley was called “Horseshoe Stable Yard” on Rocque’s map of 1746, suggesting it was attached to an inn, but whether this or an earlier one, perhaps on York Street, I cannot tell. (There is a “Black Horse Stable Yard” on the map, which comes out on York Street at about where the “Black Horse” – today’s “Buckingham” - stood.)
Little George Street got its modern name of Vandon Street in the 1890s (with Horseshoe Alley becoming Vandon Passage, but the Horseshoe was still there in the 1899 Public House and Publican Directory *
