Duke of Cambridge, 39 & 41 Palace Street, St Margaret, Westminster

Westminster St Margaret index

This house stood on the corner of Palace Street and William Street (today’s Wilfred Street), although until about 1881 the Censuses (though no map that I have seen) regarded the southern section of William Street as part of Palace Street. After re-numbering, it became 39-41 Palace Street (often quoted as simply 39). It was not a beer-shop in 1861 or earlier. The 1868 OS map marks it as a PH, and the proprietor in 1891 claimed to be a Licensed Victualler, but all other records make it a beer-shop until 1934. Today, it is a pub called the Cask and Glass, which 'claims' to be one of the smallest pubs in London. It is named in the 1911 census summary. *
