The Rising Sun originally stood at 48 Charles Street (two doors away from The Ship). The whole of the street was demolished in 1868-9 to build government offices, and the then licensee applied to transfer the license to new premises at Delahay Mews, Gardner’s Lane. (From the 1869 OS map, this was at the western end of the street, on the south side, where a PH is marked). Rather than a transfer, a new license seems to have been granted after some delay, and the pub remained in Gardener’s Lane until it was demolished in 1899, when King Street was swept away so that Whitehall could be joined to Parliament Street. ***

There is a problem with the 1891 Census. No 1 Gardener’s Lane is listed
twice, once before No 2 and again after No 6. Both entries are labelled
“Public House”. In the first listed entry is a household headed by Charles
Almond, a carpenter, and in the second a household headed by Thomas
Nicholls, a Licensed Victualler. One might suppose that the second entry is
for our pub, except that the Westminster City Archives Research Group lists
Charles Almond as Licensee from 1891-4 and that Thomas Nicholls is licensee
of the Swan and Horseshoe, which should be at No 3. I cannot resolve this
	issue at present. ***
