The Jolly Gardeners, Brentford
In support of the application of the tenant and owners of the beer licence of the Jolly Gardeners, Old Brentford. Mr S W Barnes, surveyor, said the premises were very old, and consisted of two converted cottages. There were 20 other houses within a radius of half a mile. The nearest houses were far superior, and one of them had been recently rebuilt. He knew nothing of the history of the house, but he had heard Mr Grain sat that one family had held the licence for 70 years.
Mr A H Pittard, assistant clerk to the Brentford justices said there were 17 licensed houses within a radius of a quarter of a mile. This was a most respectably conducted house, and had for a great number of years been in the same family. The present tenant came in by way of a transfer from his father. The police evidence was that the house was used by the artisan and working class, and was well conducted. Two benefit clubs met at this house. Mr Grain asked the committee to renew the licence chiefly for this reason that it was the only one which Messrs Young and Co, of Wandsworth, 0wned in the district, and that the refusal of the licence would deprive the licensee of his living. Mr W H Padbury, the tenant, said his family had been in occupation of this license for 65 years. He was satoisfied with the trade done in it, which showed an upward tendency. Footballers used this house, and there were two benefit clubs holding meetings on the premises, The committee refused the renewal, and referred the licence for compensation.
