White Hart is good example of rare medieval architecture.
New evidence which may prove that part of the White Hart Hotel, High street, Edgeware, dates from late medieval times was uncovered by an inspector from the historic buildings section of the GLC last week.
The public house is listed with the Dept of Environment as being of historical insterest, and it was always known that it dated from the 1700s, but a new study revealed beams which seem to date from 1500 or perhaps even earlier.
The hotels tenants Madeleine and Iain Mackay have been at the White Hart for over 11 yers , and have always loved the place.
The building was first registered as an inn in the Gore Division records in 1751.
In 1783, the licensee Francis Ansell Aldridge Hawkes of the Crane public house apprehended two footpads dressed as soldiers who had robbed Mr Hawkes brother.
Gradually, the history of this hotel, which is on the old Roman road, Watling street, is being uncovered - and Mr Mackay thinks there may have been an ale house there since Roman times.

A petition to save the White Hart Hotel, High street, Edgeware, as a historical building, has so far been signed by 1,500 people, said the tenant manager, Mr Iain Mackay.
The hotels owners, Ind Coope breweries, want to sell the hotel to Dixons Photographic Ltd for demolition and re-developmnet as a petrol station and eight storey offices.
As part of the preservation campaign, Mr Iain Mackay wrote to the new Poet Laureate, Sir John Betjeman.
