W J Russell, was a widower when he took over The Jolly Farmer (not The Jolly Farmers) his full name was William James Russell. *

He previously had a pub at Flamstead End, in Cheshunt where his son Joseph Edward Russell was born in August 1887. His son (Joseph) left the Royal Navy in February 1919 and lived and worked at his father's pub and took over the licence when his father died in 1920.  *

In November 1922 Joseph married my Great Aunt, Louisa Rose (her surname was Rose) and on their marriage certificate, Joseph is shown as 'licensed victualler living at 17 Church Street and she lived about 300 yards away from the pub in the same house that my mother was born in.  *

I do notice that the next licence was just a few years later, so I believe this to be when Joe left the pub trade. *
