Magdala Tavern, South Hill Park, Hampstead NW3

Hampstead pub history index

This pub was present by 1868. ** The modern address is 2a South Hill Park. *
The pub was named after the Battle Of Magdala, during the Abyssinian War of 1868.
On Easter Sunday, 10 April 1955, Ruth Ellis shot and killed her lover David Blakley as he left The Magdala. She was hanged at Holloway Prison on 13 July 1955. She was the last woman to be executed in the UK. ***

The pub closed in 2014 and was later declared an Asset Of Community Value (meaning it can only reopen as a pub). The upper floors have been converted into flats, the bar area remains empty. In September 2021 it is now the recently re opened again, as the Magdala. ***
