Highgate Brewster Sessions, Four houses scheduled, none to be closed. The proceedings commenced at 10 o'clock and were not concluded until half past five.
Four houses had been scheduled for closing - The Triumph, Finchley; the Joiners Arms, Finchley and the Bull and Horns, and the Red Lion and Sun, Highgate but all licenses were renewed.
The Red Lion and Sun, which since 1876 there had been 26 tenants, but the present licensee had been in occupation since 1897. Mr Martineau said the house was free and the licensee was not tied in any way. He had no loan, and could go onto the open market for his beer, wines and spirits.
He had been in occupation for nine years. The 26 tenants was a thing of the past.
The lease had expired at Christmas as it was in Chancery, who would not grant a new lease until the old had expired. Trade was £85 a month in takings, with payments about £60.
Takings are £325 a year as there are 13 months in the year. In 1897 the present tenant paid £480. The rent was £60 a year for a lease granted in 1888. He had spent £240 for repairs, and only two years ago he spent £160. The license was renewed.
