My husband is a descendant from James and Hannah that are listed as running this pub in 1871. *
When the 1871 Census was indexed, the name 'Scrimger' was incorrectly transcribed as 'Seringer'. The flowery writing of the enumerator was easily misunderstood. *

James was a mariner, so away from home for many months of the year. Hannah basically ran the pub from about 1868 on. The 1871 Census does not give her much credit in the occupation section of the census. Typical of Victorian times, the focus was more on men than women. Her father was William Armstrong, the publican listed in 1858. Hannah tragically died in 1876 and James hung on for a while but gave up the pub in 1877. *
