The address is 2 Calthorpe street in the 1871 census and earlier; the very early addresses refer to Calthorpe lane. The 1856 Banbury directory confirms the Black Swan as the beer house.

My Great, Great, Grandfather, Samuel Carpenter kept the Black Swan at one
time. My late mother provided me with this information and she had it direct
from her grandmother Fanny Ellen Carpenter, who was listed at the address on
the 1861 census. I don't know the exact dates when Samuel Carpenter kept the
pub, but Samuel Carpenter was listed as residing in Calthorpe Lane in both
the 1851 and 1861 census returns. In the 1861 census his occupation is given
as whitesmith and beerhouse keeper. So, it seems reasonable to believe that
he kept the Black Swan during all that period. *
There were two Samuel Carpenters keeping the 'beer house' in Calthorpe Lane.
The 1841 Samuel Carpenter (born 1789 in Wroxton) is listed in the 1841
census. By the 1851 census he was listed as a farmer in Claydon (a village
near Banbury). In the 1851 Census it is Samuel Carpenter (b 1820) who is in
Calthorpe street. As was so often the case the eldest son was named for the
father so this is a son taking over the beer house. I have not located him
in 1841 but I am guessing that he was in London learning his trade
(whitesmith) as he was married in Marylebone in 1845, when he married Hannah
Pratt. She appears to have been born in Banbury, but doesn't appear on the
1841 census as far as I can see. On her baptism record her parents are given
as John and Mary and her father, John, is listed as a cabinet maker. This
matches perfectly with the marriage certificate where John is again listed
as a cabinet maker. Samuel's father is also listed correctly by name and as
a smith. The marriage is 'after Banns' suggesting that they had both been
living in Marylebone for a time. I'm guessing she was in service in
1841. Perhaps Samuel 2 went to work in London to be close to her. Anyway, at
some time in the next five years (before the 1851 census and probably quite
soon after their marriage as their firstborn arrived in 1847) they came back
to live in Banbury and took over The Black Swan'.
