IFFLEY is a parish and village in the Headington Union, and hundred of
Bullington; 2 miles S. from Oxford, on the banks of the Thames. The church
dedicated to St. Mary, presents some of the purest and most perfect
specimens extant of the enriched Saxon or early Norman architecture, and
ranks among the greatest architectural curiosities of England. Considerable
alterations have been made during the lapse of time, but the west end
remains nearly as it stood 100 years before Westminister Abbey was orected,
and is particularly fine and imposing; the edifice comprises nave and
chancel. The living is a perpetual curacy in the deanery of Cuddesdon,
endowed by royal bounty, with £600 and £500 parliamentary grant. Bev. Thomas
Acton Warburton, DCL., incumbent. The Archdeacon of Oxon ig patron. Here is
a Parochial School for boys and girls, and a small school endowed in 1805
with £39 per annum: it was founded for fifteen girls, who are educated and
partly clothed. The parish also possesses other valuable charities.
