Islip 1863 Dutton, Allen & Co Directory listing

ISLIP is a large parish in the hundred of Ploughley and union of Bicester. The village is picturesquely situated on the river Cherwell 5 1/2 miles N.N.W., from Oxford. Within a short distance is a station on the Oxford and Bletchley branch of the London and North-Western Railway. The church, dedicated to St. Nicholas, is a fine structure, chiefly of the fourteenth century, containing chancel, nave, and side aisles, and a handsome square tower, in the Tudor style, with six bells. The chancel was built by Dr. South in the year 1680, iu the debased Gothic style prevalent at that period. In 1861 the edifice underwent a complete restoration at an expense of £2000, raised principally by subscription, and grants from the Dean and Chapter of Westminster, and the Society for Promoting the Enlargement, Building, and Repairing of Churches and Chapels. The living is a rectory in the deanery of its name, and patronage of the Dean and Chapter of Westminster. The tithes are commuted for £490. The Rev. Francis Trench is rector, and the Rev. Francis A. Morgan, curate. There is a Free School in the village founded by Dr. South, in 1710, in which 25 boys and 16 girls are educated, some of whom are clothed and apprenticed. An Infant School has lately been erected by subscription of the inhabitants and proprietors of property in the parish. This place gave birth to Edward the Confessor; the font in which it is supposed he was baptized is now in the church at Middleton Stoney. The Dean and Chapter of Westminster are lords of the manor, and John Stevens, Esq, principal landowner. Acreage of tho parish 1966. Population in 1861, 688.
