This was originally the Anchor. Later the pub was named The Railway then the Wise Alderman and now is The Highwayman. The Railway Hotel is listed as at Thrupp in the 1891 census ***

Anstis Faulkner was the first Landlady found in the Recognizance Book for
1753-1759; She died in 1759. John WATTS had the licence 1760-1784, and when
he died, his wife (the youngest daughter of Henry & Anstis ) continued
until her own death in 1793. Their son James who was born on the premises in
1764 then took over. He died there in 1814. James's widow Ann moved to the
Dog taking the anchor with her ( hence the Dog
became the DOG and Anchor). The Anchor was renamed The railway. There was a
signal box near the Inn where Alderman Frank Wise worked. He was a much
respected Alderman and the pub was renamed in his honour - The Wise Alderman
(The Wise) in 1967. In the summer of 2009 it was again renamed The Highway
man ***
