There has been an inn on this site since the seventeenth century, named the Crosse Swords until at least the 1770s and the Flying Horse since at least 1839. This pub was renamed the Eastgate Hotel in 1880 and rebuilt in its present form in 1900. ** The address is the Eastgate Hotel, 27 Merton street in the 1911 census.
