John Whiting was ‘Master’ or Innkeeper from 1785 to 1817 (Source Jacksons
Oxford Journal obituary which records his death and that he was innkeeper
for 37 years.). His daughter Ann Alicia Whiting born 1787, married William
Holland and they ran the Golden Cross. *
The newspaper also describes the Auction of the Horse and Jockey , from the
home of, none other than William Holland, of the
Maidenhead Inn in 1819.

‘Capital Inn in a most eligible situation IN THE CITY OF OXFORD
TO BE SOLD BY AUCTION by Messrs Adams
At the house of Mr Wm Holland, the Maidenhead Inn,
on Monday the first day of February 1819 at five o’clock in the evening
under conditions of sale then to be produced ‘ All that well-known good
accustomed INN now in full trade, The HORSE and JOCKEY, pleasantly situate
in St Gies, adjoining the turnpike road at the entrance into Oxford formerly
occupied by Mr John Whiting, but now in the occupation of Mr Daniel
Chandler; – comprising on the ground floor two good kitchens, a bar, and two
parlours; on the first floor is a commodious rood and three excellent
bed-chambers, and three sleeping rooms in the attic, arched cellaring, good
yard, excellent stalled stabling for fifteen horses and three loose box
stables, good garden, with all the necessary out-offices and buildings in
good repair. *
