My great great grandfather, George Talbot, was a proprietor here in the
1870s. When George’s father (also George Talbot) died in 1860, I can see
from the 1861 census that his wife, Frances Talbot, became a publican at the
Red Ox at 33 High Street in St. Thomas. ***
In 1841 and 1851 my great great great grandfather was listed as a brewer.
From the limited knowledge I have gained from on-line maps, I am thinking he
was living close to Hall’s Brewery and Morrells. I guess after all this time
it would be impossible to determine which brewery he was working for. ***
A man named Richard Talbot who I haven’t yet proved to be a relative, is
shown in the 1851 census to have been running a brewery tap at 34 High
Street in St. Clement. ***
