SANDFORD with the Hamlet of LEDWELL.
The above villages form a parish in the Wootton hundred, and union of
Woodstock, and are distant from the latter town 7 miles, and 4 1.2 from
Deddington. The church is a neat and plain old structure, dedicated to St.
Martin; a few years ago the edifice was completely restored at the expense
of the present Rector; and through the munificience of Edwin Guest, Esq., of
Sandford Park: the chancel was rebuilt and adorned with a handsome painted
window. In the interior is a stone pulpit and an oak screen, both very
elaborately carved; and, also a coat of arms, beautifully executed, of the
reign of Queen Elizabeth. The living is a vicarage in the Woodstock deanery,
and now held by the Rev. Thomas Curme, M.A. There is a National School for
boys and girls, conducted under the superintendence of, and principally
supported by, the rector.
Ledwell is a hamlet in the parish, distant 1 mile from Sandford. A mansion
formerly stood here, the residence of Earl Deloraine, who is buried in the
church. The park is the principal object of interest. In 1861 the population
was 476 with an area of 2278 acres.
