SHIPTON-UNDER-WHICHWOOD, with the Hamlets of MILTON, LYNEHAM, and LANGLEY.
Shipton-under-whichwood is a large parish in the hundred of Chadlington, 4 miles N.N.E. of Burford, and includes the chapelries of Lea Field, Ramsden, and Milton, with the hamlets of Langley and Lyneham. The West Midland Bailway passes through the parish, and has a station 1 mile N.N.E. of the village of Shipton. The church is an ancient edifice, dedicated to St. Mary. The living is a vicarage, value £350, in the gift of the professor of civil law in the University of Oxford; the Rev. William Edward Dickson Carter, M.A., is incumbent. There is a national school. The charities amount to about £40 per annum, principally derived from two amounts bequeathed in 1804 by Lady Reade, of £500 and £300 Old South Sea annuities, the proceeds of which are given to the poor. Shipton Court, the seat of Sir John Reade, Bart., is a fine building, in the Elizabethan style of architecture. The population of the entire parish, in 1861 was 2708. The village of Shipton only, contained 655 persons.
Milton is a township in this parish, in two parts, called Upper and Lower Milton, situate 1 mile W. of Shipton. A handsome church, in the decorated style, dedicated to St. Simon and St. Jude, was built in 1854, by J. H. Langstone, Esq., M.P., who is lord of the manor. A large school, with residence, has since been added. The village is well supplied with water, brought two years ago, by public subscription, the distance of a mile. The population in 1861 was 895. There are chapels for the Baptists and Primitive Methodists.
Lyneham is a hamlet in this parish, l 1/2 mile N. of Shipton. A new school, licensed for Divine worship, has lately been built by J. H. Langstone, Esq., M.p., in which service is held on Sunday evenings; the curate of Milton attends. The population is 237 souls.
