History of Silvertown
Silvertown 1882 Kellys Directory
Silvertown (near North Woolwich) in the ecclesiastical parish of St Mark,
Victoria Docks, and formed out of the civil parish of West Ham; is so named from
the Messrs Silver, who established here the large works of the India Rubber,
Gutta Percha and Telegraph Works Company Limited: here are also large chemical
works, sugar refineries, and the works of the Gas Light and Coke Company. This
place, part of which lies in the county of Kent, is in the Eastern Metropolitan
postal district, and Bow county court district, Barking rural deanery, Essex
archdeaconry and St Albans diocese, and has a station on the Great Eastern
Railway (North Woolwich line). The ecclesiastical parish of St Mark was formed
in 1864, and comprised and included North Woolwich and portions of the parishes
of East and West Ham, with a population in 1871 of 12,954. St Mark’s church,
near the Victoria Docks, built after the designs of S S Teulon esq, is in the
Decorated style, with walls of coloured brick and consists of chancel, nave,
aisles and tower surmounted by a spire containing 2 bells: there are 850
sittings, all free and unappropriated: the church was consecrated by the Bishop
of London, in August 1862. The register dates from the year 1862. The living is
a perpetual curacy, yearly value £300, in the gift of the Bishop of London, and
held by the Rev Henry James Bodily, of St Bees. A small mission church for West
Silvertown, is now (Dec 1881) in course of erection. Here is a place of worship
