History of Silvertown in 1886
Silvertown (near North Woolwich) within the southern division of the new
parliamentary borough of West Ham, in the ecclesiastical parish of St Mark,
Victoria Docks, and formed out of the civil parish of West Ham; is so named from
the Messrs Silver, who established here the large works of the India Rubber,
Gutta Percha and Telegraph Works Company Limited: here are also large chemical
works, sugar refineries, and the works of the Gas Light and Coke Company. This
place, part of which lies in the county of Kent, is in the Eastern Metropolitan
postal district, and Bow county court district, Barking rural deanery, Essex
archdeaconry and St Albans diocese, and has a station on the Great Eastern
Railway (North Woolwich line).. The ecclesiastical parish of St Mark was formed
in 1864, and comprised and included North Woolwich and portions of the parishes
of East and West Ham, with a population in 1871 of 12,954, and of the reduced
district in 1881, 4,481. St Mark’s church, near the Victoria Docks, built in
1861-2, at a cost of about £8,000, after designs of S S Teulon esq, is an
edifice of brick in the Decorated style and consists of chancel, nave, aisles
and tower with spire containing 2 bells: there are 400 sittings, all free and
unappropriated: the church was consecrated by the Bishop of London, in August
1862. The register dates from the year 1862. The living is a vicarage, yearly
value £410, in the gift of the Corporation of the City of London, and held since
1875 by the Rev Henry James Bodily, of St Bees. A small mission school church
was erected in 1882. Primrose Hall, situated in Knights Road, West Silvertown,
is a handsome building, containing a fine hall for lectures and public
entertainments, capable of sitting 500 persons, an extensive library and
reading, billiards, bagatelle, coffee and smoking rooms; attached are hot and
cold baths. It was erected for the Primrose Library Society, composed
principally of the employees of Messrs John Knight & Sons, of the Silvertown
Soap Works and Oil Mills, at the expense of their president, Ambrose Knight esq,
and was opened by him on Wednesday, December 2nd, 1885. There is a mission
chapel in connection with the Congregationalists, erected at the expense of W
Duncan Knight esq.
